So-called "Early Gastric Cancer" is defined here as a superficial cancer of which the infiltration is limited to the mucosa and to the submucosa, with or without regional lymphnode metastasis defined by Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society in 1962.
Among 198 patients of gastric resection due to gastric cancer at Seoul National University Hospital during May, 1969 and April, 1973, 9 patients were early gastric cancer.
The results were summarized as follows.
1. The incidence of early gastric cancer among gastric resection due to gastric cancer was 4. 5 percent.
2. The type of 5 patients (55. 6%) was superficial, depressed_.type-( Type IIc) and its combined type. The lesions of 6 patients (66.7%) were located in the pylorus and the.antrum,..2 in the body and 1 in the angulus. Concerning the infiltration of early gastric cancer, ,4 were confined to the mucosa and 5 to the submucosa.
3. Metastasis to the regionaJ~,lymphnode yas determined in 3 patients (33.3%).
4. Five(55.6%) out of 9 patients were correctly diagnosed with radiological examination, and 3(50%) out of. 6 patients with endoscopical examination. Diagnostic accuracy was much improved with combined examination, radiological and endoscopical in this series. In 6 patients examined with radiology and endoscopy, 5 patients (83%) were correctly diagnosed.
